Camden, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team split Sunday's double header with Rutgers-Camden, losing the first in a close 2-0 game and winning the second in an impressive 6-1 victory.
The first game started out quiet for both teams, leaving both teams out of the run column through the first four innings. The Raptors scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, and the Hawks, despite rallying with three hits in the final inning, were unable to score on a single from
Nina Simms with
Meagan Blair being thrown out on a close play at the plate to end the game.
Emily Fox pitched well again for SUNY New Paltz, giving up only five hits in a full game outing, but unfortunately couldn't get the win.
The Hawks seized the momentum and stacked up the hit column during game two, with hits from
Taylor LaFrance,
Carol Ann Campsey, Simms, and
Julia DiSpigna.
In the second inning an RBI single from Dispigna put SUNY New Paltz on the board early.
"Overall in our second game we had better at bats at the plate," said Hawks coach Maronski after the game.
The offensive explosion SUNY New Paltz was waiting for came in the sixth inning.
Celia Santini and
Michaela Damore worked walks, and a single from LaFrance loaded the bases.
Julia Mastrup forced a walk, bringing in in the Hawks' second run of the game.
Pressured by the momentum swing, the Raptors brought in freshman pitcher Rachel White, and the move appeared to work, as she forced two quick fly outs. With the bases still loaded,
Katie Quagliana worked a walk, scoring Damore and making it a 3-1 game for the Hawks. Sophomore outfielder
Carol Ann Campsey dropped the hammer, breaking the game open with a base clearing, two-out double, giving the Hawks a 6-1 lead that would be the final score.
"In the sixth inning we were able to get a couple people on base and work two good walks to score runs and then Carol Ann came up with the huge bases clearing double that was awesome to see from her," Maronski said.
Quagliana had a great outing, giving up only one run to the Raptors, and recording her first win of the season.
SUNY New Paltz finished the weekend with a 1-2-1 record, but played its best game during the latter half of Sunday's double header, so it can move forward confidently into the upcoming week.
The Hawks' next game is March 14 against Ohio Wesleyan University in the PFX Spring Games. The game is the first of five double headers they will play that week in Clermont, Florida.
