OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's tennis team fell to Cortland, 6-3, on Friday. With the loss, the Lakers move to 3-7 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to an even 5-5.
Erin Vargo and
Jill Burns were the highlight doubles for Oswego, dominating their opponents 8-2. Also in doubles, Cortland led 7-4 over
Bridget Bender and
Lorrayne Broach, but the pair rallied to tie it at 7-7. Despite the rally, the Red Dragons eventually were able to win the set 9-7.
In fourth singles, Bender once again showed her resilience. After losing the first set 2-6 and winning the second set 6-1, Bender was in a 5-3 hole against her opponent. However, the freshman scored three straight points and her opponent retired, giving Oswego its second point of the day.
The Lakers' third point came in fifth singles. Tokyo native
Haru Kobayashi won 6-1 in the first set, and blanked her Red Dragon opponent in the second set for Oswego's final point of the day.
Oswego will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when it faces St. John Fisher. It will be the Lakers' final competition before the SUNYAC Championship begins on Oct. 14.
