The visiting Oswego State Lakers scored five unanswered goals to overcome a 7-6 deficit early in the second half en route to a 12-8 victory against SUNY Oneonta in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament. The win for the Lakers (11-5) advances them into the semifinals this Friday against top-seeded Cortland while the loss for Oneonta ends its season at 9-7-1.

Oswego jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game including a pair by junior Brigid Regin. Junior Toni Laneve and sophomore Montana Garrett each added a goal for the Lakers.

The Red Dragons finally got on the scoreboard at the 9:22 mark when senior
Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) pushed a shot past the Oswego goalie off an assist from classmate
Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South). The goal for Casey was her 265
th point of her career pushing her into second all-time in program history.

After another goal by Garrett made the score 5-1, Oneonta ran off four straight goals over the final 18 minutes to knot the score at five apiece entering halftime. Junior
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) and sophomore
Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) both scored a pair during the run.

Freshman
Haley Vermette (Brewster/North Salem) gave Oneonta its first lead of the game when she buried a free position goal less than three minutes into the second half.

Less than one minute later, Regin tied the score once again off an assist from Teresa Shattuck.

Cohen gave the Red Dragons its last lead of the contest at 7-6 when she scored a free position goal at the 6:10 mark.

Senior Gemma O'Kane then scored back-to-back free position goals to put the Lakers back in front 8-7. Oswego added consecutive goals by Riley Jaquin and Regin to carve out a 10-7 lead with less than eight minutes remaining.

Freshman
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) brought Oneonta back to within a pair of goals before Laneve and Regin scored the final two goals for the Lakers making the score 12-8.

Statistically, the game was relatively even with shots being 25-24 in favor of the Lakers. Ground balls were even at 14 apiece while the Lakers had a slight 13-10 advantage in draws. Oswego converted 5-of-8 free position shots and Oneonta made 2-of-6.

Angela Ponto recorded 10 saves for Oswego and
Lexi Keen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) made seven stops for Oneonta.
