Golden Knights down Bears in season opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (1-0) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (0-1) 18-6 in the teams' season opener on Wednesday afternoon. Seniors Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y/Warwick Valley) and Ashley-Lee Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) each scored two goals for the Bears.
 
Clarkson senior attack Aubrey Borgesi (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) opened the scoring with a man-up goal just 51 seconds into the contest. Ferrer countered with her first marker three minutes later to tie the score. After two more Golden Knight goals, including Borgesi's second, Burrowes struck at 19:51 to close the gap to 3-2. Clarkson then closed the half with a 10-0 run to close to build a commanding 13-2 lead.
 
The scoring was nearly even in the second half, with the Golden Knights creating a 5-4 edge. Ferrer netted the first goal of the final 30 minutes at 28:06. Freshman attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored her first career goal at 22:59. Burrowes buried her second at 18:32 and senior attack Lane Perl (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) scored the Bears' last goal with 5:43 left.
 
In her collegiate debut, Potsdam freshman goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 10 saves and allowed 13 goals in the first half. Junior goalie Olivia Woolheater (Remsen, N.Y./Remsen) allowed five goals and stopped eight shots in final period in her first Potsdam action. Clarkson junior goalie Emily Fischer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga) earned the win with two saves and four goals allowed in the first 37:15. Sophomore Sydney Christiansen (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Albany Academy) allowed two goals in the last 22:45.
 
Golden Knight senior midfielder Lexi Smith (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) finished with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Borgesi had three goals and senior midfielder Katie Sergeant (Ontario, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) contributed two goals and an assist. Sophomore attack Sydney Roderick (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) recorded four assists and senior midfielder Abby Collins (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) and freshman attack Julia Lavarnway (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) each scored two goals.
 
The Bears are back in action next Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they host the Wells College Express.
