Women's soccer takes No. 9 Geneseo to second overtime

Red Dragons come up short 3-2

GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit taking No. 9 SUNY Geneseo to a second overtime today before falling 3-2.  Geneseo (8-0-1/3-0 SUNYAC) got three goals from senior forward Audrey Reid while senior Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) and junior Julie Steinhauer (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) each tallied for Oneonta (1-7-1/1-2 SUNYAC).

Reid scored her first of the game in the 28th minute on a penalty kick.  Sophomore forward Domenica Piccoli beat a defender and was tripped in the box, earning the penalty kick. Reid then stepped up to the 12-yard mark and converted the attempt into the upper-right corner to put Geneseo ahead, 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, Reid struck again when she curled a corner kick from the left side to the near post, going just over the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.

The Red Dragons responded just before halftime, as Rolston finished off a scramble in front of the goal to make it 2-1 in the 43rd minute.

The two teams headed to halftime with the score 2-1 in favor of the host Knights.

Oneonta tied the score in the 54th minute.  Oneonta played a ball from the right flank to the far post where junior midfielder Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) trapped it down to Steinhauer at the six-yard box, who then put it away.

Reid nearly completed a hat trick in the 60th minute with a second penalty kick attempt, but pushed this one wide of the left post.  Reid finally ended the game in the 103rd minute on a free kick nearly 25 yards out. She drove the ball on the ground sneaking it just inside the near post for the game-winning goal.

Oneonta will finish its weekend road trip tomorrow with a game at Brockport beginning at 1pm.
