BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team swept Alfred University to win in three straight sets Wednesday evening. The Golden Eagles move to 14-7 on the 2017 season, where the Saxons drop to 5-16.
The Green and Gold came out hot, jumping to a 6-3 lead over Alfred. Brockport strung together an eight-point run to extend their lead to 14-4, with points coming from
Jamie Schlesinger,
Meaghan Mastro, and
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. The Golden Eagles offense kept cruising as they closed out the first set with a final score of 25-13.
The Brockport defense found some trouble early in the second set, as they were trailing 5-4. Both teams traded points, before the Golden Eagles went on a four-point rally to take a 13-9 advantage. The Green and Gold increased their lead to 17-11 after back-to-back kills from
Lindsey Luce and one from
Kelly Waters. Brockport closed out the second set 25-18 off an ace from
Kathleen Irwin.
The Golden Eagles came out red hot, with a five-point streak to open up the third set. Brockport extended the lead with a kill coming from
Elena Grossman and
Rachel Fiser serving three straight points to take a 13-5 advantage. The Green and Gold doubled their lead to 22-9 after a four-point rally, with kills from
Cassie Birth and Schlesinger and two aces from
Noelle Poloncarz. Birth closed out the third set and the match for Brockport on a kill, to win 25-13.
Ortiz-Whittemore finished the game leading the offense with 12 kills, where Grossman accounted for five and a .714 hitting percentage, and three blocks. Fiser paced the offense handing out 22 assists, with Poloncarz tallying 11.
Maddy Taylor lead the defense with 11 digs, and Birth and
Rachel Millington finishing with four a piece.
Brockport travels to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) this weekend for the RIT Invitational, where they will face RIT on Friday, with the game set to start at 5 p.m.
