Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Devils fall to Potsdam, 4-2

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Potsdam scored twice in less than a minute during the first period and led thereafter en route to a 4-2 SUNYAC men's hockey win over Fredonia on Stroke Survivor Night at Steele Hall.

Tyler Young scored his fourth of the year on a power play at 15:10 and Vinny Guimond made it 2-0 at 15:51 with his third of the year.

Victor Tracy (Stockholm, Sweden) made it 2-1 at 17:06 of the first period, the first of two times the Blue Devils (4-5-1 overall, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) managed to pull within a goal. The second time came at 12:59 of the third period when Todd Schauss (Terryville, Conn.) put home a rebound to cut the Potsdam margin to 3-2.

Potsdam's Jon Venter was credited with the game-winning goal at 8:48 of the third period to give the Bears (7-1-1 overall, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) the 3-1 lead. It was Venter's first collegiate goal. Young scored his second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, into an empty net with six seconds left.

Young earned the No. 1 star, Potsdam goaltender Brendan McMenimen the No. 2 for his 35-save performance, and Fredonia's Tommy Martyn (Westchester, Ill.) the No. 3. Martyn, a freshman defenseman, had two assists.

Fredonia junior goaltender Erik Bogart (London, Ont.) finished with 29 saves.

The Blue Devils wore red jerseys to raise awareness for stroke victims. Donations, raffles, and ticket receipts resulted in approximately $9,000 raised for The Foundation of Kaleida Health. Bob Lysyj, the father of Fredonia assistant coach Mike Lysyj, dropped the ceremonial puck prior to the contest. Mr. Lysyj, 70, is a stroke survivor.

The Blue Devils are back at home Saturday night when they take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals. Game time is 7 p.m.
