FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The nationally ranked Geneseo Knights stymied the Fredonia Blue Devils, 3-0, in SUNYAC women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (7-0-1 overall / 2-0-0 SUNYAC), ranked No. 9 in the latest NCAA Division III poll, did all their scoring in the first half and allowed no scoring chances to the Blue Devils (4-5-0 overall / 1-1-0 SUNYAC).
Dominica Piccoli scored twice for Geneseo. She dribbled through defenders and chipped a shot into the far left corner for a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. The Knights kept up the pressure before making it 2-0 on Piccoli's second goal, a chip in the box after a short through pass from Catherine Cunningham in the 31st minute. A hard foul in the box by Fredonia set up Audrey Reid fir a penalty kick, which she converted for a 3-0 Knight lead early in the 34th minute.
The Blue Devils were credited with just one shot on goal, by junior
Abby Price (Naples, N.Y.), and it was quickly brushed aside by Geneseo goalkeeper Emily Janiszewski. Fredonia freshman goalkeeper
Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) made 10 saves before giving way to junior
Kendall Owczarzak (Lancaster, N.Y.) down the stretch. Owczarzak did not face a shot on goal.
Coming off two straight shutouts, the Blue Devils maintained their defensive posture -- yet could not contain Geneseo's relentless attack. The Knights took 28 total shots, to just three by Fredonia, and had a decided 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Blue Devils return home Tuesday night go take on Allegheny in a non-conference game. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
