Box Score Brockport, NY – Less than 24 hours after playing the New Paltz Hawks on the road where the Red Dragons dropped its first dual match of the season, Oneonta headed back on the road to Brockport to play the Golden Eagles. The Red Dragons showed little effects after their four-hour match the day prior and extended travel schedule quickly disposing the Golden Eagles 9-0. The shutout for the Red Dragons was its was the seventh of the season moving to a 10-1 mark. Today the Red Dragons accomplished this with four-freshmen in the lineup.
Doubles play began with junior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and freshman
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) playing the number one flight and they quickly settled matters on route to a shutout win 8-0. The number two doubles team of senior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and freshman
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) also suffered no ill effects from travel and were dominant in their 8-2 triumph. Number three doubles saw some drama as a couple of freshmen were paired together;
Emma Messenger (Marlboro/Marlboro) and
Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) were tested by a twosome of freshmen from Brockport. The Red Dragon duo had a case of nerves and went down 6-5 and in danger of losing the doubles contest match broke serve to go to 6-6. When they went ahead 7-6 they had three match points but could not convert. The match eventually headed to a tiebreaker and the Red Dragon tandem were down 3-1 but came back and won to secure a 3-0 lead going into singles.
Singles play was a routine affair for Oneonta and each of the six matches contested were won in straight sets. Two highlights took place, the first at number one singles as Brault playing in the top spot suffered some tightness and fatigue due to the strenuous schedule and had a tight first set playing from behind until she broke serve in the tenth game. From that point Brault won eight of the next ten games and walked away a 7-5, 6-2 victor. The other highpoint took place at number six as Papini, a promising young freshmen got the start today in that spot and played with more confidence and took home a 6-2, 6-1 triumph completing the shutout for the Red Dragons.
The Red Dragons now will have three days off to rest. However, the annual rival matchup between their crosstown rivals The Hartwick Hawks is up next on Wednesday, October 11
th at Hartwick beginning at 3:30 PM. Oneonta women's tennis will then have three more days to prepare after that for the State University of NY Athletic Conference Championships that will begin on Saturday, October 14
th where the Red Dragons will enter the tournament as a number two seed.
