ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team took home their ninth straight win on the season on Friday, with a 3-1 win over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The Golden Eagles move to 15-7 on the year, where the Tigers fall to 11-12.
The Green and Gold started hot earning the first two points in set one, with a kill from
Laiken Fox and an ace from
Jamie Schlesinger. Brockport extended their lead to 10-3, with great serving from
Maddy Taylor, along with back-to-back defensive blocks from
Meaghan Mastro and
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. Schlesinger, who had a great offensive game, teed up three consecutive kills for the Golden Eagles, to increase their lead 16-5. The Brockport offense easily closed out set one with back-to-back kills from
Noelle Poloncarz and Mastro, to win 25-11.
Both teams battled it out in the beginning of set two, as they traded points to start the match. The Green and Gold took their first lead, with kills from Ortiz-Whittemore and
Brianna Richardson to set the score at 6-4. Brockport increased their lead to 13-7, with tough serving from Poloncarz and a kill from Schlesinger. The Golden Eagles defense struggled as the Tigers came back to trail 18-17, before Ortiz-Whittemore tallied up three straight kills to give them a 21-17 lead. Brockport held onto their advantage and closed out set two by a score of 25-21.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in set three. The Green and Gold struggled defensively, allowing RIT to tie the game at 12-12. Both teams kept the game close for the remainder of set three, but the Tigers were able to claim a 27-25 victory.
Brockport trailed early in the fourth set 3-1. The Green and Gold continued to struggle as they gave up nine points to the Tigers, as they fell behind 16-13. The Green and Gold picked up the pace earning the next two points, with a kill from Richardson. The Brockport offense dominated the remainder of the game, receiving the last nine out of 10 points, to win by a final score of 25-19.
Ortiz-Whittemore lead the way for the Golden Eagles finishing with 14 kills, where Schlesinger accounted for 10 kills and a .692 hitting percentage. Poloncarz paced the offense totaling with 38 assists and four aces. Schlesinger finished the match leading the defense with 10 digs, and
Kathleen Irwin accumulated nine.
Brockport will be back in action tomorrow in the RIT Invitational, where they will face Vassar College at 10 a.m. and Nazareth College at 12 p.m.
