Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cortland overtakes Devils, 2-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia scored first but was unable to hold off Cortland in SUNYAC women's soccer Friday afternoon.

Erin Valente scored off a loose ball in front of the net in the 79th minute as the Red Dragons eked out a 2-1 win over the Blue Devils.

Aleeya Clemons (Olean, N.Y.) gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Erin Pratt (Rotterdam, N.Y.) sent a long pass from near midfield toward Cortland's 18-yard box. Clemons collected the ball in stride, dribbled a few yards and sent a shot off Cortland goalkeeper Danika Svenden's hand and inside the right post.

It was the ninth goal of the season for Clemons, the most by a Blue Devil since Katie Kleine and Reilly Condidorio had nine each during the 2012 season.

The Red Dragons pressed right from the start of the second half, coming through with the game-tying goal just 1:16 into the period. Romero controlled a loose ball deep on the left side of the box, beat Fredonia goalkeeper Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) one-on-one and tucked a shot into the open goal. Ten minutes later, Romero nearly struck again, but Quimby made a diving save on her shot from the left side.

Valente's game-winning goal began off a Cortland corner kick, Fredonia attempted to clear the ball away, but Valente one-timed a shot from the middle of the box on a loose ball that went to the upper right of the goal. The Blue Devils managed just one shot the remainder of the game with Abby Miller making a routine save. She entered as goalkeeper at the start of the second half.

The Blue Devils take a 6-7-0 overall record and 2-2-0 SUNYAC mark into Oswego for a 1 p.m. game Saturday vs. the Lakers.
