Blue Devils drop home opener to Medaille

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Justice Fagan had 22 points to lead the Medaille Mavericks to a 78-65 men's basketball victory in the Fredonia Blue Devils' home opener Saturday afternoon at the Steele Hall Auditorium.

Kirk Hawkins added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, who improved to 2-2 with the non-conference win.

Dante Williams (Buffalo, N.Y.) led a balanced Fredonia offense with 16 points. He also grabbed 12 rebounds while Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y.) also connected for a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kay Jackson (Ridgewood, N.Y.) added 12 points and Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y.) had 11 points for the Blue Devils, who fell to 1-4.

Fredonia led early in the game 3-0 on a three-pointer by Williams, 5-3 on a layup by Jackson, and 8-5 on a three by Ice before Medaille took command with a 17-5 run. The Blue Devils got within four points later in the first half -- they trailed 35-29 at the break -- and within five points early in the second half but could get no closer.

Fredonia owned a 40-30 rebounding advantage yet could not overcome Medaille's three-point shooting, where the Blue Devils were outscored 30-18

The start of the game was delayed for 75 minutes due to a scheduling snafu with the game officials.

The Blue Devils enter SUNYAC competition next weekend when they visit Plattsburgh on Friday night and Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.
