Game Recap: Softball |

Dramatic comeback in game 2 leads softball to sweep of Oswego

Alyssa Bluethgen picks up pair of wins

Junior Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) dove into first base to beat the throw scoring sophomore Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) from third base with the winning run in a dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Oswego today at Red Dragon Softball Field.  The win for the Red Dragons gave them a sweep and raised its overall record to 12-10 and 6-4 in the SUNYAC.

After the two teams battled through nine innings, the game was knotted at nine runs apiece.  Corbett began the tenth inning on second base in conjunction with the tie-break rule for softball.  She was sacrificed to third by Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) and was still there after Gwen Donaldson (Babylon/Babylon) grounded out to the pitcher bringing Del Genio to the plate.  Del Genio hit a ground ball to the shortstop and gave every effort to beat the throw doing so head first allowing Corbett to score the winning run.

The game didn't look as though it was going to be a victory for Oneonta through the first two-and-a-half innings falling behind 9-0.

Oswego (12-10, 5-5 SUNYAC) took advantage of Oneonta miscues putting pressure on starter Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) who was chased in the third inning.  Calabro allowed eight runs in her outing, but only three were earned.

Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack), who earned the win in game 1, came in and tossed eight innings of three-hit, shutout ball to record the victory in game 2.  Bluethgen faced 28 batters over the final eight innings striking out seven batters to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Oswego posted a pair of unearned runs in the first inning.  Jessica Roe drove in one of the runs in the first.

The Lakers added three more runs in the second and four in the third inning to grab what appeared to be a runaway lead.  Oswego collected seven hits including a combined four hits by Rebecca Vilchez and Gabriella Vertuccio.  The two also finished the game with a pair of runs batted in each.

Oneonta began its comeback in the bottom of the third inning plating five runs to get themselves back in it.  With two outs and Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central) at third and Del Genio at second, Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) singled to center field to drive the two in.  Kathryn Emig (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) then tripled to left field to knock in Sexton.  Meaghan Raliegh reached on an error, which scored Emig and then she came in from second base on an RBI single from Corbett.

Oneonta added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to send the game to extra innings.  Emig was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then went to third on a muffed throw by the first baseman.  She scored the tying run on a ground out to the shortstop by Corbett.

Del Genio, Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke), Sexton and Corbett each had two hits in the game.  Sexton and Corbett each drove in a pair.

In the opener, the Red Dragons posted a three-spot in the bottom of the third en route to its 3-2 victory.  Collins singled to the pitcher to get things started in the inning.  She stole second and came around to score when Meehan reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.  Meehan, who went to second on the error, then scored on an RBI single by Del Genio.  Del Genio scored the final run of the inning on a ground out to shortstop by Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South).

Oswego rallied in the seventh down by two runs.  Vilchez doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Angela Frampton.  With the tying run at second base, Bluethgen got Sarah McCullough to pop out to second base.  Bluethgen went the distance striking out three.

Oneonta is scheduled to play at Brockport on Tuesday beginning at 2pm.
