Overtime Goal Leaves Brockport Short of Victory

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team dropped a close battle against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent SUNY Geneseo Friday afternoon, losing by a final score of 11-10. The Golden Eagles falls to 1-7 (1-1 SUNYAC) in 2018, where the knights move to 9-0 (2-0 SUNYAC).

Both teams went toe-to-toe in the opening half, but it was Geneseo to strike first to take a 1-0 advantage. Brockport stepped up and dominated the Knights for the remainder of the first, scoring four goals and while allowing none. Taylor Thomas was the first to score for the Green and Gold on a free position attempt to tie the game up 1-1. Brockport doubled up minutes later as Andrea Zlinsky beat the keeper with the assist from Sara Grapevine, to take a 2-1 advantage.  Heather Conklin ending the scoring in the first half with a pair of goals to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Golden Eagles kept the momentum up early in the second half, as Jade Williams added a goal to pull away 5-1 over the Knights. Brockport stumbled, as Geneseo strung together a three-goal run to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Green and Gold answered three straight goals of their own to pull away 8-4. Williams was the lone scorer in this run, with her first goal coming off the feed from Thomas, and her second off a free position that she ripped high past the visiting goalie, with one second remaining on the shot clock. Williams scored the last goal of the sequence off a quick catch-and-shoot from Grapevine. Brockport struggled for the remainder of the contest allowing six goals and scoring only two to set the score at 10-10. Hannah Cullen had a chance to send the Golden Eagles past the Knights on a free position opportunity with 13 seconds left, but she sent shot wide and both teams headed into overtime.

Brockport lost the opening draw control in the extra time, which led to Geneseo scoring the game-winning goal shortly after to win the game, 11-10.

Williams led the offense with four goals, while Conklin finished with three. Chloe Kurst and Thomas end the game with a goal and an assist a piece. Grapevine paced the offense as she handed out five assists.

Sarah Brown played the full 60-minutes in net and racked up 10 saves on the afternoon.
