Warriors upend Bears in twin bill

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.--Lycoming College (5-9) took both games of a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-5) on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors won game one 11-3 in six innings and game two 7-3. Sophomore first baseman Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 1-for-3 with two RBI in game one. Freshman first baseman Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game two.

The Warriors got on the board early when left fielder Rachael Shady stole home. A few pitches later and with a runner on second, Lycoming got one more run after a throwing error by the Bears.

In the bottom of the third, second baseman Cayla Treaster hit a double to center field that brought in designated hitter Taylor Gessner. Before the inning ended, pitcher Liz Nace grounded out and got Treaster across home.

Senior pitcher Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) got the bat on the ball in the fourth with a one out double to center field. Fish followed up with a single down the right field line to bring in Hubinsky.

The next inning, Potsdam got two more runs in to cut the deficit to one. Freshman designated hitter Kayla Palmer (Chester, N.Y./Chester) started the inning off with a single. One out later, freshman shortstop Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) hit a single and got Palmer to third. Falsion scored both Palmer and Folmsbee with a double to center.

The Warriors did not allow the Bears their final chance after they scored seven runs in the sixth, implementing the mercy rule. Shady scored one run after she grounded out to second, followed by Gessner singling up the middle scoring another run. Lycoming scored another run after a fielding error, then had Treaster single to right field and bring home Gessner. After scoring one more on another error, Warriors' Rachel Duda closed out the game with a two RBI single, taking game one 11-3 in six innings.

Hubinsky (1-2) was given the loss after pitching 4.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Palmer pitched 1.2 innings, striking out a pair, and allowing five unearned runs on four hits. Junior Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) came in to face the last four batters and gave up two unearned runs on two hits. Nace pitched all six innings for Lycoming striking out one, allowing three runs on nine hits.

Fish went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Falsion went 1-for-3 and two RBI. Senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) went 2-for-3.

Potsdam started game two on the right track with Falsion singling up the middle, sophomore right fielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) working a walk, and Hubinsky reaching on an error. With the bases loaded, the Bears got one run in from a passed ball. Shady started Lycoming off with a single up the middle. One out later Shady made it to third and crossed the plate after a passed ball, knotting the game at one.

Center fielder Ashley Schoenstadt started the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side. Right fielder Darci Warriner scored Schoenstadt and herself with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

The Bears tied the game back up in the top of the fifth, starting with Brace hitting a sacrifice fly for Hubinsky to score. Miller then hit a single to right field that brought in Fish.

Lycoming took control of the game with a four run bottom of the fifth. Having the bases loaded, Warriner hit a two RBI single to right center. Duda hit a single of her own to bring in another run to extend the lead to three. Before the inning ended, Meghan Crosby grounded out to first and scored Warriner.

Potsdam could not get anything done in the final two innings and fell to Lycoming 7-3 in game two. Fish (0-1) received the loss after pitching 4.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing six earned runs on nine hits. McCauley came in to pitch the final 2.0 innings, where she struck out one and allowed one hit. Shady pitched a complete game for the Warriors, striking out six, and allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

Hubinsky went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Miller went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Both Falsion and Fish went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Bears will now travel back north to host SUNY Geneseo on Friday at 3 p.m.
