The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team remained hot today recording its fourth straight shutout win. Today's victory was a 5-0 blanking of Fredonia, which was its fifth consecutive win and one that earned them a spot in the SUNYAC tournament that begins next weekend with first round matches.
Â
As has been the case during the winning streak, Oneonta (6-9-1/5-4 SUNYAC) completely dominated with a relentless attack. During the Red Dragons' current winning streak, they have outscored its opponents 25-1. Today, they outshot Fredonia (6-11-1/2-6-1 SUNAC) 30-6 and earned seven corner kicks while not allowing one to the visitors.
Â
Oneonta didn't waste any time getting ahead of the Blue Devils scoring the game's first goal in the fourth minute. Junior
Julie Steinhauer (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa), who had a goal and an assist yesterday, crashed the goal and one-timed a great crossing pass to the front of the goal by classmate
Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central). The pair would hook up in the 52
nd minute on an almost identical play to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead. Downin was able to dribble the ball into the box and to the end line before chipping a pass in front that Steinhauer slid to the back of the goal.
Â
Steinhauer completed her day with an assist on Oneonta's second goal in the first half. Steinhauer weaved through traffic and dropped a pass to senior
Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Eastchester) at the top of the box. Berk then took a touch and sent a shot along the ground to the far left corner of the goal that skipped by the outstretched keeper.
Â
Sophomores
Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) and
Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) tallied late in the match. Kornfeld got her head on a crossing pass from freshman
Mykayla Ryder (Minisink Valley/Minisink Valley) in the 80
th minute. Ousouljoglou received a pass out of the back from classmate
Dana Rende (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and carried the ball into the box before getting a shot off that slid by the keeper for the final goal of the afternoon for the Red Dragons.
Â
Senior
Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North) made a pair of saves today to earn her fourth win of the season.
Â
Oneonta will close out the regular season this Wednesday at Hartwick College at 7pm.
Â
The Red Dragons will await word on the final tournament seeding later today before they know where they will travel to play its first round match in the SUNYAC tournament next Saturday.
