Binghamton, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team continued its strong fall season with a shutout of Brockport today in Binghamton.  The win for the Red Dragons raised its overall record to 12-1 while clinching a playoff spot for the SUNYAC tournament that begins next weekend.

The action got underway with the doubles as the number one flighted pair of sophomore Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and senior Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) were absolutely dominant with aggressive steadfast strategy scoring a shutout victory 8-0.  The second flighted tier of freshman Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and sophomore Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) lost the first game of the match and from that point won eight of the next nine games dominating with steady net play tallying an 8-2 triumph.  The commonly known pair nicknamed the Enforcers saw freshmen Anna Hood (Oneida/Oneida) and Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) topple their opponents 8-3 in the third position with good teamwork, serving and overpowering net play.

A 3-0 lead after the doubles was too much to ask a Brockport squad to overcome.  Oneonta put a new look singles lineup on the court and proceeded to shutout the Golden Eagles.  Today senior Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) played overpowering and consistent tennis in the first singles tier and recorded a straight set victory 6-2, 6-2.  Freshman Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) got the call to play in the second position and never let her Brockport opponent have any reason to believe she could win.  Macdonald was overbearing notching a 6-1, 6-0 win.  Junior Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) got off to a slow start trailing 3-2 in the first set.  Swierczyna then settled down from that point and won 10 of the next 11 games gaining an impressive 6-3, 6-1 conquest.   Swierczyna walked off the court as the Red Dragon clinching fifth point officially securing a SUNYAC playoff spot.  Freshman Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) got the start today in the fourth position and played a close first set recording a 7-5 win.  In the second set The Golden Eagle opponent rebounded with a 6-1 win forcing the super-tiebreaker to decide the outcome.  Wilson was down 3-0 and 8-6 respectfully in the decider but won the last four-exchanges playing successfully on the biggest of points.  On the fifth tier freshman Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) playing on the next court from her high school teammate (Wilson) faltered in the first set going down 7-5.  However, Loucks raised the level of play competing more consistently and won the second set 6-2 also forcing a super-tiebreaker to decide the fifth court.  Loucks was also down 8-6 in the decider and fought back to conclude an emotional win for her with all of her teammates and Oneonta supporters focused and rooting for her success.  Loucks won the last point and afterwards her teammates encircled her in celebration winning the breaker 10-8.    Finally in the sixth position freshman Tamiyah Massey (Long Beach/Long Beach) completed the shutout for Oneonta and was overpowering registering an impressive business like 6-0, 6-2 win.

Next up is a match up against the SUNY Geneseo Knights tomorrow at the Binghamton Tennis Center beginning at 4pm..  Geneseo has won nine of the last 10 SUNYAC Championships and this match is for the No. 2 seed.
