CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Cam LaVallee (Schenectady/Schalmont) scored two first-half goals to lead the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon at Jets Field. The Red Dragons improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, clinching a playoff berth with their 18 points with two games remaining. The Knights fell to 6-5-2 and 2-3-1.
Sophomore
Miguel Tunas (North Salem) and junior Migell Ormsby (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) each collected an assist for Cortland. Senior goalie
Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) made three saves.
Senior Joey Vucic (East Aurora) netted his team high fifth goal for Geneseo. Sophomore Bryan Wager (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) assisted on the score. Sophomore goalie Dillon Medd (Bedford Hills/Fox Lane) registered five saves.
Vucic gave the Knights an early lead, knocking a 35-yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal in the fifth minute. LaVallee evened the score in the 37th minute. He took a pass from Tunas and blasted a low, left-footed shot inside the left post from the left side of the box. LaVallee then tallied his seventh goal of the season and the game winner just 20 seconds before the half. On a quick counter, Ormsby collected a pass on the right side near midfield that turned into a 2-on-1 break for Cortland. Ormsby dropped a pass to his left toward the top of the box where LaVallee controlled and struck a shot off of Medd's hands and into the goal.
The Knights had an excellent chance to score the equalizer in the 60th minute, but Young made a diving save on Vucic's low shot from the left side. Cortland had a chance to add to its lead in the 70th minute when senior
Ma'Cain Spragling (Akron, OH/Brush) got off an uncontested shot from 15 yards that Medd denied. Geneseo pressed in the closing minutes but could generate a quality chance.
