Men's Basketball Claims Consolation Game Victory

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team rebounded today and earned their first victory of the season, 70-54, against Fredonia State in the consolation game of the Hilbert Tip-Off Tournament.

John Carroll University dominated their opponents this weekend and notched back-to-back 100 point games.  The Blue Streak took home the title game for first time after they out-ran SUNY Poly 115-89.  Their two-day, 225 total-points scored set a new Tip-Off Tourney team scoring record.

Hilbert and Fredonia went at each with respect.  After 20-minutes of action, Hilbert held a 27-24 edge in the scoring column with slight advantages in shooting percentages.  Hilbert was 11-26 while Fredonia was 10-25 and the Hawks hit one more three-pointer which created the 3-point spread.

The Blue Devils hit a 3-pointer early in the game to take a 6-3 lead at 16:09 but that was the final time the visitors would be on top.  Antonio Alvarez struck from deep (6-6) and Joseph Braniecki's turn-around jumper game Hilbert their first lead.

The Hawks never created more than a six-point lead as Fredonia continuously responded through to intermission.

Braniecki, Alverez and Hunter Martineau posted six quick points at the start of the second period and stretched their lead to 33-24.  That nine-point difference went to 11 but the Blue Devils cut it under ten at 15:49. Two-minutes later Hilbert had regained the double-digit lead and ballooned it to 22-points in two occasions in the final four minutes of the game.

Hunter Martineau led the Hawks with 15 points while Antonia Alvarez notched his first collegiate start and posted 13 points behind solid shooting.

Both Branciecki and Masia Phillips came off the bench and gave the Hawks exactly what they needed.  A lift offensively (12 points each) and seven rebounds (Braniecki) and four assists with no turnovers (Phillips).

David Arlaud was a work-horse on the glass as he led with 10 rebounds.

The day ended with a barn-burner on the court.  John Carroll plastered 60-first half points against SUNY Poly and responded with another 50 in the second session.  Poly didn't handle JCU's  full court defensive coverage as their turnovers led to several fast-break lay ups or that extra pass that set up a 3-point dagger.

At the conclusion of the Championship game, John Carroll was award the Tip-Off Tourney plaque and the All-Tournament team was announced.  Joining Hilbert's Hunter Martineau were: Ian Helps (Fredonia), Josh Gregory (SUNY Poly) and both Matthew Csuhran and Jackson Sartain from John Carroll.

The Hawks, who evened their record at 1-1, return to action this week before they head home for a Thanksgiving mini-break.  Hilbert will travel to Houghton College November 21 and then host Alfred University Saturday, November 25.
