Rochester, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team fell in a tough match to their SUNYAC rival SUNY Geneseo 7-2.

The Hawks have been focusing on doubles play all season long in the hopes of reversing last year's results in the finals against the Knights where they were swept in doubles. That hard work paid off in the beginning of this match as Carol Tyson and Lindsay Haley pulled out an 8-4 win at third doubles.

SUNY New Paltz also put up a fight at the second doubles slot as Jenna Grandville and Victoria Zezula lost a close 8-6 decision. Rounding out the doubles play was Courtney Koran and Emi Lewis at first doubles as they fell 8-2.

Singles play started out on a rough note for the Hawks as Lindsay Haley withdrew at fifth singles due to injury putting SUNY New Paltz down 3-1.

The Hawks battled at every singles spot, but only Courtney Koran was able to pull out the win at fourth singles. Koran dropped the first set, but came back and won a super tie-breaker for the third set. Koran won with a final score of 3-6, 7-5 (10-5).

Two other matches ended in a super tie-breaker, but the Hawks weren't able to capitalize as Carol Tyson dominated the opening set at first singles but ended up losing with a score of 6-0, 5-7 (3-10). Emi Lewis also dropped a third set super tie-breaker at third singles posting a score of 7-6, 3-6, (4-10).

Jenna Grandville dropped a lopsided first set, but made things interesting in the second set until she ultimately fell at second singles with a score of 0-6, 4-6.

Cielle Pappalardo made her first appearance in the singles lineup at sixth singles, but she dropped a close match 3-6, 3-6.

"I'm really proud of the way we played in the singles, unfortunately we had to play with only five players due to injury after the match started," said head coach Rob Bruley. "They were really close singles matches, and we still have work to be done in the doubles lineup."

The Hawks look to get back on the winning end in SUNYAC play as they face off against the College at Brockport tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
