CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland improved to 4-1 on the season with a 9-0 women's tennis victory over visiting Alfred University. The Red Dragons remain home to face Brockport on Saturday at noon.
Cortland set the tone during a warm afternoon of play with three doubles victories by a combined score of 24-9.
Mia Hayes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and
Nikaylah Williams (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills West) won 8-2 at first doubles.
Kelliann Camp (Sayville) and
Cassie Special (Williamsville/Williamsville South) won 8-5 on the second flight, and
Tina Wertman (Rochester/Caledonia-Mumford) and
Isabella Arrigo (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) won 8-2 at third doubles.
The Red Dragons won all six singles matchups in straight sets. Hayes posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at number one and Williams won 6-4, 6-2 at number two. Camp earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at third singles.
Arrigo was pushed in the first set at fourth singles by Alfred's Nurila Kambar but came out on top, 7-5, and she followed that with a 6-2 win in the second set. Special registered identical 6-3, 6-3 wins at fifth singles, and Terry posted matching 6-2 victories in each set at sixth singles.
Hayes and Arrigo are each 4-0 in singles play this fall, with Special and Terry each at 4-1. Arrigo and Wertman improved to 4-1 as a doubles unit.
