CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team dropped a tough State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon by final scores of 11-9 and 8-0. The Golden Eagles drop to 11-13 (1-7 conference) on the year, while the Red Dragons improve to 15-14 (8-2).
Game 1: Loss, 11-9
Brockport came ready to hit in the opening game of this doubleheader, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. After
Alexis Ross reached on an error by the shortstop and
Meghan Cullen walked,
Casey Danko drove them both home with a double to the right-centerfield gap, giving the Golden Eagles and early 2-0 lead.
Lindsay Wachna was up next, and drove in Danko with an RBI single through the right side, before being advanced to third on a ground ball out and a wild pitch.
Karleigh Eaton continued her hot hitting in the next at-bat, singling through the left side to plate Wachna and cap off the four run inning.
Despite the tough start, the Red Dragons were able to claw back into this game, scoring two in the bottom half of the first and two more in the second to knot things up at 4-4. They tacked on another three in the bottom of the fourth, using a two-run homerun to take their first lead of the game at 7-4.
With their backs against the wall, the Brockport seniors came up with some big hits at the dish, with Wachna first getting the team back to within two after a solo blast down the left field line, her second of the season.
They got to within one in the top of the sixth after scoring a run on a throwing error by the shortstop, bringing up
Karleigh Eaton with two runners on. After working a 2-2 count, the senior blasted a homer to left, putting the Green and Gold back in front 9-7.
The lead did not hold however, as the Red Dragons tied the score in the bottom of the sixth, and walked away with the win in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homerun, ending the game.
Wachna and Eaton led the team with three hits apiece, and combined for six RBI in the game. Danko also drove in a pair of runs on her two hits, while
Kacie Hubbard registered a pair of base knocks as well.
Game 2: Loss, 8-0
The bats were not able to get going in game two, as the Golden Eagles managed just three hits in the outing, two of which came off the bat of
Shelby Perry who finished the game 2-for-2. Eaton also managed a base hit in the game, giving her four on the day.
Although Cortland never scored more than three runs in an inning, they slowly chipped away at the Golden Eagle pitching, recording runs in the first, second, third, and fourth to take the 8-0 lead.
Courtney Kane earned her second win of the season for Cortland, while
Becky Knorr took the loss for the Golden Eagles, moving to 4-4 on the season.
Brockport will look to break their skid tomorrow afternoon when they travel to SUNY Oswego for a doubleheader with the Lakers beginning at 1 p.m.
