#19 Cortland Out "Fires" Oneonta in Battle of Red Dragons

ONEONTA, N.Y. –  The nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team used a late four-goal run in just over a five-minute span to earn a 17-15 win at Oneonta Tuesday afternoon in SUNYAC action in cold and snowy conditions.

Freshman Hannah Tiso (Somers) led the visiting Red Dragons (10-4, 5-0 SUNYAC) with a career-high six points on a career-best four goals and two assists. Senior Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) totaled a season-high five points on three goals and two assists, while sophomores Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Molly Newton (Skaneateles) also netted three goals.

Sophomores Baylee Ojeda (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) each tallied one goal and two assists for Cortland, senior Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) and freshman Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) notched one goal apiece and freshman Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded two assists.

Freshman goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore) made two saves and collected four ground balls for Cortland. Meager caused four turnovers and won three draw controls, senior Kristyn Drake (Tully) and junior Hailey Dobbins (Syracuse/CBA) each secured four draws, Tiso won three draws and junior Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) scooped up three ground balls.

Taylor Casey netted a game-high seven goals for Oneonta (6-6-1, 2-3 SUNYAC). Kelsey Cohen recorded four goals and two assists, Sophia Calabrese tallied two goals and three assists, Kelly Clarke and Lauren Bascelli each scored a goal and Jaime Morris contributed three assists. Goalie Lexi Keen stopped 15 shots. Victoria Varone won six draw controls, and Erin Fowler and Cohen each registered four draws.

The game featured several momentum swings as goals came often. Oneonta opened a 3-1 lead 12:22 into the game before four straight Cortland goals in less than two minutes gave the visiting Red Dragons a 5-3 lead just before the midway point of the opening half. Oneonta then scored three of the next five goals and pulled to within 7-6, but Cortland answered with four of the next five goals to build an 11-7 lead with 2:41 remaining in the half. A late goal by Oneonta made the score 11-8 heading into the break.

Cortland quickly made it a 13-8 game early in the second half. The host Red Dragons followed with a five-goal run to even the score at 13-13 with 17:22 left on the clock. Cortland strung together the key four-goal outburst with two of the scores coming from Meager to grab a 17-13 advantage with 4:13 remaining. Oneonta scored at 1:29 and again at 25 seconds for the 17-15 final.
