FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team split a pair of contests on the road at Fredonia on Friday afternoon. The Lakers won the first game, 4-1, before suffering a 1-0 setback in the second. Softball moves their record to 17-13 overall and 9-7 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia goes to 11-22-1 and 4-12 in conference action.
In the first game, the Lakers struck first in the top of the opening frame when
Rebecca Vilchez led off with a double and
Madelana Wrubel was hit with a pitch. Senior
Gabriella Vertuccio singled to bring in Vilchez and move Wrubel to third. Wrubel came home to score on an errant throw by the catcher when Vertuccio swiped second.
Oswego tacked on another run when Vilchez led off the fifth with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error by Fredonia. An
Angela Frampton groundout succeeded in bring in Vilchez. Frampton would plate Vilchez again in the top of the seventh with a single and another Fredonia fielding error to bring the lead to 4-0.
Vilchez (12-7) gets the win with four shutout innings of one-hit softball and Frampton earns her third save of the season with the final three innings of work. She allowed the single run while striking out five Blue Devil batters.
Game two featured a good scoring opportunity for the Lakers in the top of the second when Vertuccio led off with a single.
Sarah McCullough reached on a sacrifice bunt that forced a throwing error by the Fredonia third baseman and allowed both runners to advance to second and third with no outs. Oswego was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and the game remained scoreless.
Fredonia grabbed momentum in the second with an unearned run and then held off a first-and-third scoring attempt by Oswego in the next inning when Wrubel and Frampton notched back-to-back hits.
Vilchez (12-8) went the distance, allowed just four hits, no earned runs, and struck out a pair in the loss.
The softball team returns to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they take on Buffalo State on the road in their final conference doubleheader of the season.
