CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State fittingly opened its 2019 softball campaign on the first day of spring in Clermont, Fla., dropping a 10-2 six-inning decision against Concordia in the morning game before falling 4-1 to Thomas in the late game.
GAME #1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Concordia erased an early 2-0 deficit with a seven-run fifth inning and then closed the game out with three more runs in the sixth.
- Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.
- Alyssa Nichy (Depew/Depew) was 1 for 2 with a triple, and Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 1 for 3 with an RBI double.
- Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) took the loss, working 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and five runs.
- Nichy pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and five runs.
- The Bengals plated a run on a throwing error in the first inning to open the scoring and pushed the lead to 2-0 on Benton's RBI double in the fourth that scored O'Hern.
- Concordia exploded with the seven-run fifth inning, capitalizing on four hits, two errors and four walks and the put the game away with three runs on three hits in the sixth.
FOR THE FOES
- Maddie Zazas led Concordia at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
- Gina Followell earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State responded after surrendering a two-run first inning to trim the deficit to 2-1 off back-to-back hits from Benton and Laura Bagley (Clarence/Clarence) in the top of the fourth innings.
- Thomas added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homerun to complete the win in the second game.
- Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) and Bagley led the Bengals' offense, each going 2 for 3 from the plate. Bagley added the lone RBI for Buffalo State.
- Benton finished 1 for 3 from the dish with a run scored, while Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) and Nichy each went 1 for 3 from the plate.
- Castello took the loss on the mound for the Bengals, giving up four runs on five hits in six innings of action.
FOR THE FOES
- Sydney LeBourveau led Thomas at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a two-run homerun to go along with an RBI double.
- LaBourveau also earned the win for the Terriers, giving up one run on five hits. Katlyn Coulter earned the save by allowing a pair of hits in two innings.
