CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland junior
Jake Casey (Homer) tossed a nine-inning no-hitter - the Red Dragons' second no-hitter in as many days - in a 21-0 victory over visiting Canton in the first game of a non-league doubleheader. Casey struck out 14 batters one day after
Christian Dufresne (Cocoa, FL/Space Coast) struck out 10 in a nine-inning no-hitter versus Elmira. Casey's no-hitter is the 20th in school history, only four of which were nine-inning games.
The only other time Cortland has thrown two no-hitters in the same season was in 1981 when Ray Gadd no-hit Hartwick, 10-0, and Mike McNamara no-hit Clarkson, 7-0, in games that were not on consecutive days.
Cortland (25-6), ranked 10th nationally in Division III, completed the sweep with a 7-0 win in the second game for its 17th straight victory. Cortland has not allowed a run in its last 28 innings.
Cortland 21, Canton 0
Casey, now 4-1 on the season, allowed five baserunners on four walks and a hit batsman, but recorded three pickoffs to end up facing only two batters over the minimum. The closest the Kangaroos came to a hit was in the top of the fourth inning when Travis Schindler led off with a deep fly ball to center that
Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) tracked down while racing toward the fence.
Cortland scored nine runs in the bottom of the third with a rally that started with two outs.
Patrick Schetter (Beacon) and
Matthew Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) hit back-to-back homers, followed by a
Dan Schweitzer (Poughquag/Arlington) single, a wild pitch, a
Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs) walk and a
Garrett Heaton (East Patchogue/Bellport) RBI single.
Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) followed with a two-run triple to right, and he scored on the play after an error on the throw into the cutoff man. Pragana walked,
Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) reached on an error, which allowed Pragana to score, and
Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a two-run homer.
Michalski also singled home two runs in a four-run fourth, and Cortland's seven-run sixth featured RBI singles by
Joe Tardif (Cutchogue/Mattituck) and
Wyatt Myers (Chittenango), a bases-loaded walk by Heaton and
Austin Kaplan (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) being hit by a pitch to force in a run. Tardif singled in Cortland's final run in the seventh.
Michalski finished 3-for-3 with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored and Tardif was 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs. Schetter ended 2-for-3 with a homer and Heaton drove in two runs and scored twice. Canton starter Collin Trathen allowed nine runs, five earned, in two and two thirds innings. The Kangaroos committed seven errors that led to 10 unearned runs.

Isiah Hudson (Hyde Park/FDR),
Steven Salisbury (Cranston, RI/Moses Brown) and
Frank Vesuvio (Armonk/Byram Hills) combined on a five-hit shutout in the seven-inning nightcap. Hudson (3-0) went five innings and allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Salisbury pitched a perfect sixth and Vesuvio hit two batters but struck out one and did not give up any hits or walks in the seventh.
Pragana led off the bottom of the first with a single, BeVard walked, and Personius was safe on an error during a sac bunt to load the bases. Schetter singled to drive home a run, and BeVard scored on a wild pitch to give Cortland a 2-0 lead.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the second on a Pragana RBI single, and in the fourth Michalski led off with a triple and scored on Massa's sac fly to right. Cortland concluded the scoring in the fifth. Canton committed two errors on one play to allow a run to score, followed by a
Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck) sac fly to right and a Michalski RBI single.
Michalski finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and was a combined 5-for-6 with two triples, five RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Pragana went 2-for-2 with an RBI and BeVard was 1-for-3 with a double, walk and run scored.
Joseph Dwy went 2-for-3 and Ben Miller finished 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch to lead Canton (5-18). Luis Torres-Rivera tossed a complete game for the Roos and gave up only three earned runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Cortland will host Rochester on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
