Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Roos upend Bears, 10-8

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (2-1) erased a 5-3 second quarter deficit with five straight goals and held off the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (0-2) 10-8 on Tuesday night. The Kangaroos got a stellar performance from their junior goalie Kody Kocsis (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) who stole the show with 20 saves.

Senior attackman Lukas Baildon (Berlin, Germany/JFKS Berlin) led the Bears with two goals and an assist and senior midfielder Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) added a goal and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Nick Slate (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) scored twice and fellow sophomore Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) chipped in a goal and an assist.

Baildon opened the scoring with a man-up goal on an assist from Soderquist at 11:53 of the first quarter. Baildon then set up Slate at 5:32 for a 2-0 lead. Junior midfielder Josh Yelvington (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) netted the first of his game-high four goals with 38 seconds left and Canton trailed 2-1 after 15 minutes.

At 13:13 of the second quarter, sophomore attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) netted his first of the season to give Potsdam a 3-1 advantage. However, Yelvington struck twice in 27 seconds to knot the score at three at the 11:12 mark. Huiatt assisted on Slate's second marker at 7:12 and Soderquist set up Baildon again at 6:22 and the Bears appeared as if they might start to pull away. It wasn't to be. Roos sophomore attackman Jake Sutton (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) ignited a 5-0 run with a marker at 3:46. Senior attackman Trent Yule (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) evened the game 11 seconds later and the teams entered the break tied at 5-5.

Sophomore midfielder Dante Coco (Bristol, Conn./Bristol) gave Canton the lead for good at 11:02 of the third quarter. Yule netted his second at 9:56 and junior attackman Kyle Smith (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) capped the run at 7:53 to make it 8-5. Huiatt struck at 5:05 and Potsdam trailed by two through three quarters.

Prior to the start of the fourth quarter, Potsdam took a three-minute illegal stick penalty and 14 seconds later found itself down two-men after an illegal body check penalty. Yule capitalized with a man-up marker at 14:20. Yelvington added another man-up goal at 12:13 and they proved to be the difference in the contest. Soderquist finally ended the momentum at 8:37 to close the gap to 10-7. Just 30 seconds later, junior midfielder Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made it 10-8 and the Bears appeared on the verge of a comeback. Kocsis combined with his defense to thwart the rally. The goalie made three crucial saves over the remainder of the game to seal the win.

Potsdam junior goalie Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made six saves and allowed 10 goals over the first 47:47. Junior Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made one save in the last 12:13.

The Bears finished with advantages in nearly every statistical categories other than saves and goals. They outshot the Roos 54-28, forced 26 turnovers to their 20 and collected 40 ground balls to Canton's 31. Potsdam senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) dominated the faceoff circle, winning 16 of his 20 chances.

The Bears look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Utica College at 1 p.m.
