Cardinals Down Red Dragons 3-1

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team won their second consecutive conference game Saturday afternoon beating SUNY Cortland 3-1 at Stadium White.

Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton) scored her first goal of the season in the 28th minute off a rebound from Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y. / Arlington) to put the Cardinals on the board first.

Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schalmont) scored five minutes later off a free kick from Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half.

Cortland scored off a penalty kick in the 43rd minute and Plattsburgh State headed into halftime up 2-1.

Plattsburgh State's defense held Cortland to just two shots in the first half.

Cortland had another penalty shot in the 63rd minute in the second half but Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y. / Arkport) made the save to keep Plattsburgh State up by one.

Saccocio scored her 12th goal of the season of a penalty kick in the 78th minute to give the Cardinals a 3-1 advantage.

Plattsburgh State's defense held off Cortland to take the two-goal win and improve their record to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SUNYAC. Cortland is now 5-2-3 and 2-2 in the conference.

Gibson made one save in her 90:00 minutes of play and recorded her sixth win of the season.

The Cardinals out-shot the Red Dragons 19-6 with 10 shot being on net.

Saccocio logged seven shots, five on goal; Matott had four shots, two on goal and Moran had four shots, one on goal.

Plattsburgh State is home on Tuesday, Oct. 3, to host The Sage Colleges at 7 p.m.
