Devils defend Dods, win 62-53

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Moussa Samassa led all players with 19 points and 16 rebounds as the Fredonia State men's basketball team took down Penn State Shenango, 62-53, on Tuesday. Samassa shot seven-of-11 from the floor, and nailed both three pointers he attempted.

Tyler Roberts added 10 points and De'Quan Smith added nine points and three steals.

Fredonia State led wire to wire, but never really blew the game open. They led by as many as 10 points early on. Dydy Bryan converted a layup at the 12:36 mark to give the Devils a 14-4 lead. Bryan would finish with four assists for Fredonia State.

Shenango would cut the lead to four points late in the half, before a basket by Colden George closed out the period with the Devils leading, 30-24.

The Devils' biggest lead of the game of 11 points came at the 13:19 mark of the second. A three pointer by Roberts followed by a traditional three-point play put the home team up, 42-31.

Shenango would fight back and eventually pull within a point. Back-to-back three pointers by Shenango's Tyler James and Donovan Verges made it 45-44 with 7:04 to play. Shenango would cut the lead to a single point two minutes later, but the Devils punched back with an 8-0 run that would put the game away.

The Devils trailed in the battle of the boards, 44-39, but only allowed Shenango to get to the free throw line two times the entire game. The Devils were 12-of-20 at the charity stripe.

The Devils had eight steals to Shenango's two. The Devils were 22-of-62 from the floor, and the Lions shot 22-of-59.

Shenango falls to 4-11 on the season. They were led by James with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Verges added 12 and six.

Fredonia State (6-7) hits the road for a weekend set at Oneonta and New Paltz this Friday and Saturday.
