Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Mustangs outlast Bears, 8-6

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Morrisville State (2-1) scored twice late to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-2) 8-6 on Friday afternoon. Senior attack Ashley-Lee Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) and freshman attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) each scored twice for the Bears.

Burrowes opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the contest with an assist from senior attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda). The Mustangs answered with four straight, including the last three from Aria Treadway for a 4-1 advantage at 25:39. Potsdam chipped away at the deficit with the last two goals of the half. Burrowes made it a two-goal game with a free-position goal at 22:17. Stevenson netted her first at 13:29 and the Bears were down just 4-3 at the break.

Senior midfielder Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) tied the score at 25:18 of the second half, but Morrisville pulled away again with two more from Gina Mohammed and Grace Hanehan. Freshman attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) started another comeback with a free-position marker at 17:26 and Stevenson tied the game at 6-6 with her second goal at 16:03. A Hanehan free-position goal scored at 13:23 proved to be the difference, giving the Mustangs the lead for good. With 1:19 left, Morrisville goalie Kadi Bice stopped a Reitano opportunity to tie the game. The Bears then forced a turnover with 49 seconds remaining, but were unable to keep possession. With 10 seconds remaining, Treadway scored her fourth goal of the game to seal the outcome at 8-6.

Freshman goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) was the tough luck loser despite allowing just four goals and making nine saves in the last 55:39. Junior Olivia Woolheater (Remsen, N.Y./Remsen) allowed four goals in the first 4:21. Bice earned the win, stopping 12 shots.

Stark and junior defender Tessa Connell (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) each collected four ground balls. Stark also caused two turnovers as did senior defender Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) who also picked up three ground balls. Junior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) had a game-high three draw controls.

The Bears now head south for two games in Hilton Head, S.C. They'll face Husson College at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Norwich University at the same time on Thursday. Potsdam is then back home to host Elmira College at Maxcy Turf Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14.
