Red Dragons Sweep Plattsburgh, Fall to New Paltz in Five, in SUNYAC Action

GENESEO, N.Y. - Cortland swept past Plattsburgh convincingly before losing a five-set heartbreaker to New Paltz during SUNYAC women's volleyball league play at SUNY Geneseo.

The Red Dragons are now 8-12 overall and 2-4 in SUNYAC play with three league matches remaining (Oct. 20-21 in Buffalo). The top six teams in the 10-team standings qualify for the conference playoffs, which start Oct. 31. Two of Cortland's four league losses have come in five sets. Cortland is currently in seventh place, one game behind Oswego and Oneonta (both 3-3).

Cortland started Saturday's action with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-10 win over Plattsburgh. Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) was dominant in the win with 10 kills and no errors in 13 attempts for a .769 attack percentage. She also finished with two blocks.

Jessica Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) ended with seven kills and one error in 14 attempts for a .429 attack percentage and was second on the team with four blocks. Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) led the Red Dragons with five blocks, two solo. Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) finished with 20 digs and Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) registered 33 assists for an 11-per-set average.

Cortland started quickly with a .364 team hitting percentage in the first set (14 kills, two errors, 33 attempts), followed by a .235 showing in the second and a .206 in the third to finish the match at .267 (38 kills, 11 errors, 101 attempts).

Plattsburgh (now 6-15, 0-6 SUNYAC) was led by Michelle Simmons with 10 kills and Brianna Coon with 18 assists.

Cortland was on the verge of knocking off New Paltz to end the day before the Hawks rallied for the win in the fifth set. The Red Dragons pulled even at two sets apiece with a 25-22 win in the fourth, and Cortland led 9-3 in the fifth. New Paltz, however, scored nine straight points to take a 12-9 lead.

The Red Dragons did get back to within 12-11 on kills by Nicole Silberer (Centereach) and Moran, but New Paltz ended the match with three straight kills, the final two from Demi Herasme. New Paltz won by set scores of 25-20, 14-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11.

Courtney Silberer (Centereach) paced Cortland with 16 kills, followed by Moore with 13 and Allen with 11. Amelio distributed 47 assists in addition to her six aces and 14 digs, and Graff ended with 27 digs. Allen paced the squad with four blocks.

New Paltz, which lost to Brockport later Saturday and is now 12-8 overall in league play, was led by Taylor Cimillo's 18 kills. Kerri Neville added nine kills and four blocks, Herasme had six kills and five blocks, and Maddie Zwicki totaled 39 assists and 16 digs.

Cortland will play a non-league match at Ithaca Wednesday at 6 p.m.
