Bears earn split at Fredonia, Brace sets career RBI record

FREDONIA, N.Y.--The SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-16, 1-5 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Fredonia (8-19-1, 2-10) in game one 6-0, before taking game two 4-3. Senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) knocked in a run to set the Bears' RBI record with 63 for her career. Senior left fielder Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) went 3-for-7 and scored twice on the day.

In game one, Cassie Herman reached on a fielder's choice and Katelyn Dennis homered to center field to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second with two on, Megan Maull doubled to left center to plate Lauren Pixley. The following inning, Pixley doubled to right center and brought in Dennis, giving Fredonia a 4-0 lead after three.

The Blue Devils closed out the game out with another run in the sixth and seventh to win game one 6-0.

Hubinsky (1-6) pitched 3.0 innings, struck out two, and allowed three earned runs on six hits. Junior Alyssa McCauley (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) came in for three relief innings, striking out one, and allowing two runs on five hits. Katie Yudin went the distance for Fredonia, allowing two hits.

Both sophomore first baseman Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and Hubinsky went 1-for-3 in the contest.

The Bears came out of the gate quickly in game two, scoring three runs. Hubinsky got it started with a double to center, with sophomore right fielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) following up with a single. Brace reached first on a bunt that brought Hubinsky in. Condon gave Potsdam a 2-0 lead after scoring on a wild pitch. Junior centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored the last run of the inning after a sacrifice bunt that scored sophomore pinch runner Abby Hodgdon.

In the top of the second, the Bears got one more run when a fielder's choice of the bat of Fish brought Hubinsky home.

The Blue Devils got on the board after Makenzie Keeler singled to left field to drive in Rhianna Paoletti.

Fredonia rallied in the bottom seventh to get runners on second and third with one out. Herman drove in a run with a ground out to short. The Blue Devils cut the deficit to one after a wild pitch, but Fish got Megan Maull to ground out to third to end the threat and the game.

Fish (1-2) got the win after pitching a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits. Sam Seegar pitched all 7.0 innings for Fredonia, striking out five, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Hubinsky went 2-for-4 and scored twice during the contest while Condon went 1-for-3 with a run. Brace and Fish each went 1-for-4 with a RBI.

Potsdam returns to action tomorrow as they travel to play against Buffalo State in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
