Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team claimed their first victory of the season over Alfred University in an overtime thriller on Wednesday, 7-6. The Golden Eagles move to 1-0 on the year, while the Saxons drop to 1-1.
The opening quarter was a defensive battle for both teams, but it was Alfred who struck first to take the 1-0 lead. Brockport's attempted answer fell short as they were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net on eight shot attempts, keeping the same score heading into the next quarter.
The Golden Eagles slipped in the beginning of the second when Alfred extended their lead to 4-0 in the first five minutes of play. The deficit was cut to 4-1 when Zack Cook notched the first goal for the Green and Gold. After another Saxon goal, Brockport tallied the final goal of the quarter as
Curtis Raymond beat the keeper with his shot, to slate the score at 5-2 heading into the next quarter.
The Golden Eagles picked up the pace in the third quarter to eventually dominate for the remainder of the game. After an early Alfred goal, the Green and Gold tallied three straight scores to trail 6-5.
Patrick Sheridan was first to cash in, as he collected a pass from Cook to sneak his shot near post past the visiting goal keeper. Moments later,
Billy Coppola added a goal of his own and beat the goalie high. Finally,
Jake Recor tallied the last goal of this quarter with three seconds left, when he received a full-field pass from goalie
Dallas Meyers and put his shot into the cage.
Brockport kept the intensity high in the fourth quarter as they only allowed three shots on net and caused five turnovers. The game was tied up 6-6 midway through the fourth as Sheridan stuffed a shot into the net off a pass from
Colton Oliver. Alfred took the final shot of the game as time expired, but Meyers stood strong between the pipes to make the save and force the game into overtime.
The Green and Gold wasted no time at all, as they capitalized just over a minute into the extra time.
Liam O'Connor collected a pass off the left side of the net and nutmegged the Saxon goalie with his shot to win the game by a final score of 7-6.
Cook led the charge on offense for Brockport with a goal and two assists.
Steven Gurin was a force to be reckoned with on defense with two caused turnovers and four groundballs.
Jahadi Prior played a tough game as he finished with a timely caused turnover and four groundballs.
Meyers finished the game with eight saves over 61 minutes of play in net for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport hit the road as they travel to Clarkson Saturday March 2, with the game set to start at 2 p.m.
