Volleyball Splits on Senior Day

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers kicked off the day with a 3-0 win over SUNY Poly before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Alfred University.  The team concludes the season with a 12-17 overall record (4-5 SUNYAC).

In the match against SUNY Poly, the Lakers pushed out to an opening-set lead of 12-5 on a Laura Finn kill and three Wildcat errors.  SUNY Poly would close to 20-16 before Finn would notch her third kill of the opener and a pair of blocks by the Lakers would seal the set at 25-19.

The second set was close early as the teams traded points until 7-7.  Sophomore Julia Flohr would then go on a 14-point service run, including three aces in that sequence.  Sophomore Sarah Braddon put up five kills in the set to help the Lakers win 25-9.

The third set was more Oswego as the team got out to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back.  The lead would grow to 22-10 as sophomore Sarah Massie and junior Ariana Wright each chipped in with three kills in the set.  The Lakers would close out the Wildcats 25-12.

Braddon led the Lakers with nine kills off the bench while Flohr had team-highs in assists (19) and aces (6).

In the second match of the day, the Lakers fell behind early to the Saxons in the first set.  The team stayed within striking distance though and tied the score at 17-17 before going back and forth the rest of the way.  With the score knotted at 23, an Alfred kill and Oswego attack error would put the Lakers in a 1-0 deficit.

The second set would see the Lakers out to a 10-6 lead on three kills by sophomore Lauren Fie and a pair by junior Alison Sullivan.  Flohr would extend the lead to 14-6 with a pair of aces and two Alfred attack errors.  Fie would add two more kills to help the team cruise to a 25-17 finish and tie the match at one apiece.

In the third, the teams traded points until the 9-8 mark.  Three kills by Sullivan, one from sophomore Shauna O'Flaherty and an ace from Flohr would extend the lead to 14-9.  Two more kills from O'Flaherty and two from freshman Melissa Lussier would help the Lakers go up 2-1 by a score of 25-14.

The fourth set would see the Lakers go up 22-18 with Fie and senior Isabella Winklestine each slamming home a pair of kills in the early-going.  A pair of Laker miscues and a Saxon kill would close the gap to 22-21.  A Sullivan kill would push the Lakers up two, but a kill by Alfred's Amber Smith and an attack error would tie it at 23.  The Lakers would get another kill from Winklestine before Alfred would get the final three points on kills to force the deciding set.

In the fifth, the Lakers would get to the switch first at 8-6 with the help of six Saxon errors.  The teams would trade points until 11-9 before two kills by Alfred and a Laker attack error would put the team down one at 12-11.  A pair of Lussier kills sandwiched around a Smith kill would tie it up at 13-13.  A pair of Saxon kills would seal the win for the visitors.

Fie (14), Sullivan (12), and Winklestine (10) all hit double-digits in kills while senior Rina Qelaj led all defenders with 21 digs.  Flohr had 20 assists, nine digs, and four aces while junior Alison Berger chipped in with 22 assists seven digs.  Finn added four kills and seven blocks in the defeat.
