Softball closes Florida trip with split

CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State concluded its Florida trip today with a split, dropping a 9-5 decision against Middlebury before closing things out with an 8-5 victory over University of Miami-Hamilton.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Middlebury - 9, Buffalo State – 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State was doomed by the big inning again, surrendering six runs in the third, and was not able to climb out of the hole.
  • Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 1 for 4 with a two-run single, and Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) and Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) were also each 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Castello took the loss in the circle, working 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits, four walks and a hit batter.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits.
  • Buffalo State struck first scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning, but the Panthers took a lead they would not relinquish with the six-run third.
  • Middlebury tacked on two more in the fourth, before the Bengals attempted to rally, plating two runs in the fifth and then cut the deficit to 8-5 with a run in the sixth.
  • Middlebury added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and then secured the win retiring the Bengals in order in the seventh.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Melanie Mandell was 2 for 3 with a home run and three runs scored.
  • Noelle Ruschil was also 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Irene Margiotta allowed five hits in the complete game win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) collected two of the Bengals' 11 hits, going 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • McIntosh was 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Lauren Jolly (Waterloo/Waterloo) and Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) were both 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Hayes earned her second win of the season, allowing nine hits and three earned runs in the complete-game effort.
  • Buffalo State took the early lead with two runs on three hits in the second inning.
  • Miami loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, but the Bengals were able to work out of the jam only allowing the Harriers to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
  • The Bengals batted around in the bottom of the fifth, plating six runs on five hits to push the advantage to 8-1.
  • Miami took advantage of four hits, a walk and an error to score four runs in the sixth inning to climb back in the game, closing the margin to 8-5, but the Bengals dealt a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Madi Brooks and Madison Beckham were 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI each.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will return north tomorrow and will open SUNYAC play with a doubleheader at Fredonia on Saturday at noon.
