Red Dragons Drop First Game of Season, 2-1, vs. Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Potsdam women's soccer team built a 2-0 lead late into the game and held on for a 2-1 victory at Cortland Friday afternoon in SUNYAC play at the Stadium Complex White Field. The Red Dragons suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Bears improved to 7-2-2 and 1-0-1.

Cortland's goal was recorded as an "own goal." Freshman Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) and junior Abby Miller (Andover) split time in goal. Svendsen stopped two shots in the first half, and Miller did not make a second-half save.

Junior Rylie Murray (Berkley, MI) tallied a goal and an assist and senior Jaci Morr (Monroe, MI) netted a goal for Potsdam with senior Amber Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) collecting an assist. Freshman goalie Gabby Hobika (New Hartford) registered 11 saves.

In a scoreless first half, the Bears had the two best chances both by junior Brooke Falsion (Brockport), who was denied by diving saves from Svendsen in the sixth minute and the 13th minute.

Potsdam struck for its first goal in the 52nd minute when Murray deposited a 30-yard shot inside the left post after controlling a loose ball. Morr made it a 2-0 game in the 85th minute. After a Cortland goal kick, Murray fed a pass to Morr who connected from the left side with a bending shot inside the left post. The Red Dragons quickly countered, cutting their deficit to 2-1 just 62 seconds later. After Hobika stuffed a close-range shot by Cortland junior Vanessa Romero (Valhalla), the ball deflected off a Potsdam defender and into the open goal. Cortland managed two more shots in the closing minutes, but junior Sam Barringer (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) missed high and Hobika made a routine save on a bid by Romero.
