Women's Lacrosse tripped up in overtime against Brockport

Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team came up short in an overtime thriller against SUNY Brockport today. The Red Dragons fell by a score of 14-13 to drop to 6-5-1 and 2-2 in the SUNYAC while the Golden Eagles improved to 7-6 and 3-1 in the SUNYAC. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Heather Conklin who scored six goals. For the Red Dragons junior Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) netted a team high three goals.

To open up the game both teams came out with high octane offenses scoring four goals within the first four minutes. With the game tied 2-2, the Red Dragons pulled away momentarily for four minutes netting three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead. The Golden Eagles rallied back with three unanswered goals of their own to knot the game back up at five. The game would bounce back and forth going into the half ending with a score of 8-8.

Going into the half Cohen, senior Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) and Lauren Bascelli (Williston Park/Herricks) each had a pair of goals for the Red Dragons.

Coming out of the half, Cohen opened up scoring with her third goal of the game assisted on the play by Casey to give Oneonta the 9-8 advantage. The game was neck and neck all the way down to the wire. With the Red Dragons trailing 13-12 and just under three minutes left in the game, sophomore Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) scored her 11th goal of the season taking the feed from Casey.  Sara Grapevine had a free position shot for Brockport with five seconds left, but goalie Lexi Keen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) made the stop to send the game to overtime.

The Golden Eagles put the game away quickly in overtime winning the opening draw, which Taylor Thomas won control and drove down the field to find Chloe Kurst to end the game 12 seconds in.

For the Red Dragons Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) had a solid game winning eight draws, scoring one goal and adding an assist. Casey was the points leader for the Red Dragons with four (two goals, two assists). Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) also had two goals and one assist for three points.

Keen made eight saves in the contest while Sarah Brown registered 14 stops for Brockport.

The Red Dragons are back in action this coming Tuesday, April 17th when they host rival Cortland beginning at 4pm.
