Women’s Volleyball falls to Rochester to open Bengal Challenge

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Brooke Latour (Lakewood/Southwestern) led the Bengals offense with 11 kills, but it was not enough as Buffalo State dropped a four-set decision to non-conference opponent the University of Rochester, to open up the six-team Bengal Challenge in the Sports Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State got off to a fast start by taking a 13-11 lead at the halfway point of the first set. Rochester bounced back to tie the score at 20-20.
  • The Yellowjackets reclaimed the lead but did not have it for long as the Bengals closed the set with five of the next seven points to control the set, 25-23.
  • Rochester used an 8-0 run late in the second frame to tie the match with a 25-9 win in set two.
  • Buffalo State and Rochester traded points for much of the third set, until the Yellowjackets scored seven points in an eight-point stretch and used the momentum to earn a 25-18 set win in the third frame.
  • The Bengals responded in the fourth set and took a 15-12 lead at the midway point of the frame. Rochester countered with a 13-3 to close out the win.
  • Eimile O'Brien (Marietta/Marcellus) chipped in six kills, two blocks and nine digs.
  • Brooke Federko (Jamestown/Jamestown) and Maria Gelyon (West Seneca/Immaculata) added 14 and 10 assists respectively.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Clara Martinez led the Yellowjackets with 15 kills and four digs.
  • Kate Korslund chipped in 14 kills, while Beth Ghyzel added 43 assists.
 
UP NEXT                 
Buffalo State will conclude the Bengal Challenge tomorrow with a pair of non-conference contests against Geneva and Case Western at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
