ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team found itself on the wrong end of two, one-run games in a conference doubleheader at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. Oswego lost a 3-2 decision in the first tilt and suffered a come-from-behind, extra-inning 10-9 defeat in the nightcap. With the split, the Lakers' overall record slips to 12-10 and its conference mark goes to .500 (5-5) while the Red Dragons are now 12-10, 6-4.

ONEONTA 3, OSWEGO 2:

Despite pounding 11 hits to just four by Oneonta, the Lakers were done in by a three-run third inning by the host. Oswego opened the scoring as Jessica Roe led-off the third inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt to advance Roe by Taylor DuBois and another Laker out, Madelana Wrubel slapped a base hit to plate Roe.

Oneonta answered with its three runs in the bottom of that same frame and the scored remained 3-1 until the seventh. Rebecca Vilchez punched a double down the left-field line to lead off the top and Wrubel followed with yet another single to put runners on the corners. An Angela Frampton sacrifice fly pushed Vilchez home and the Lakers to within one. A strikeout, an Erin Sweeney single and a pop out ended the Lakers' bid for a comeback.

Wrubel and Frampton each went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Oswego in the batter's box.

On the rubber, Vilchez through a complete-game, spreading around four hits for three runs, only one that was credited in the earned column.

ONEONTA 10, OSWEGO 9 (10 INN):

Oswego looked poised to reverse its fortunes in game two, posting crooked numbers in each of its first three at-bats. The Lakers were able to score two runs in the first, three runs in the second and four runs in the third to own a 9-0 advantage.

Again the Red Dragons answered in the third, tallying five runs to cut the Oswego advantage to 9-5. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth before Oneonta added two in the fifth and one in each the sixth and seventh to knot the game at 9-9. Neither team was able to break the tie in the next two frames before moving to international rules in the 10th.

Oswego opened the 10th with Sarah McCullough on second base and immediately bunted her over by way of a Sweeney sacrifice. A pop out and a ground out left McCullough just 60-feet away. The Oneonta half of the inning started the same with a runner on second and a sacrifice bunt. A grounder made it two outs for the Lakers but an infield single plated the Red Dragon runner from third to steal the victory.

Frampton pitched the first five innings for Oswego, scattering 10 hits and surrendering seven runs, only four of which were earned. Vilchez threw the final 4.2, allowing just three hits and three runs, all of which were unearned.

At the plate, Vilchez and senior Gabriella Vertuccio had identical days, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored each. Frampton, Wrubel, Roe, McCullough, Emily Knowlden and Carly Lawless all had one hit apiece.

The Lakers will return to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Clarkson University for a nonconference twin bill.
