CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team opened its 2017 season with a 6-3 dual-match win over visiting Fredonia. The Red Dragons won four of six singles matches, including the fourth through sixth flights, to clinch the victory.

Cortland grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Juniors Mia Hayes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Nikaylah Williams (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills West) picked up an 8-4 win at first doubles, and freshmen Tina Wertman (Rochester/Caledonia-Mumford) and Isabella Arrigo (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) won 8-6 at third doubles.

Hayes also contributed on the singles side with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number one. Arrigo posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at fourth singles, Cassie Special (Williamsville/Williamsville South) won 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles, and Olivia Terry (Hampton Bays) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the sixth singles flight.

Sarah Bunk helped Fredonia earn two of its three points. She teameed with Adriana Speach for an 8-4 win at second doubles, and she won 6-4, 6-3 at third singles. Olivia Miller outlasted Williams at second singles for the Blue Devils' other team point. Williams won the first set, 6-2, but Miller came back to win the second set, 6-3. Due to time constraints, and with the team decision no longer in question, Miller and Williams played a super tiebreaker to 10 points in place of a third set. Miller eventually emerged with 15-13 win in the super tiebreaker to claim the match.

Cortland will travel to Misericordia University in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Sept. 6, for a 3:30 p.m. match.
