A defensive zone turnover by the Bears led to an opportunity for the Cardinals and Young scored with a wrist shot from the slot. Freshman forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and junior forward Rich McCartney (Hershey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) assisted on the play.

Less than a minute later, junior forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) tallied his first of two goals on the evening to make the score 2-0 at 14:02 of the first period. Lawson took a wrist shot from near the blue line that made it past a screened Potsdam goaltender for the goal.
