Men's Lacrosse triumphant in opening match of SUNYAC play

Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse opened SUNYAC play today with a 6-4 victory against SUNY Geneseo on Red Dragon Field on a beautiful spring day. The Red Dragons improved to 1-0 in the SUNYAC (4-4 overall) and the Knights fell to 0-1 (4-4 overall). On the day for the Red Dragons senior TJ Kilmetis (Hicksville/Hicksville) had a hat trick including a game winner in the fourth period.

The Red Dragons played lock down defense in the first half only conceding two goals to the Knights off of 12 shots. Oneonta peppered the goal seven times off of 17 shots in the first half, Geneseo's Tyler Wetzel registered five saves in the first half while only allowing two goals. The two goals scored for the Red Dragons were from Kilmetis in the first period with an equalizing goal at 5:37 and senior Hunter DeLuca (Medford/Patchogue Medford) on a man-up goal which was assisted by junior Jimmy Kickel (South Setauket/Ward Melville).

Opening the 3rd period with the score knotted at two goals apiece, the Knights broke the tie with a goal scored by Ryan Cates to put Geneseo up 3-2. In the closing minute of the 3rd period the Red Dragons would swing momentum off of a goal from junior Stephen Panno (Holtsville/Sachem East) to knot the game back up at three.

The tide shifted in favor of the Red Dragons in the fourth period when Kilmetis took over on offense. The senior netted a goal with 12:32 remaining to give the Red Dragons their first lead of the game, 4-3. Not to be content with a one goal lead Kilmetis added another goal on an unassisted drive up the middle of the defense to beat the goalie 1v1.

The Knights put together a drive to score a goal to bring the score to 5-4, but the Red Dragons answered shortly after with the last goal of the game scored by Kickel and assisted by freshman Thomas McRae (Northport/Northport) to give the Red Dragons a two goal lead with 1:40 remaining.

On the day, sophomore Zachary Flynn (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had five saves in the winning effort for the Red Dragons and senior Troy Stasko (Smithtown/Comsewogue) went 9-13 in face-offs.
