Cortland Opens SUNYAC Play with Big Win vs. New Paltz

Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team opened SUNYAC play at home with a dominating, 15-5, win over New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 6-4 on the season. The Hawks drop to 4-3. 

The Red Dragons were led by sophomore Molly Newton (Skaneateles) who scored three goals with one assist. Sophomores Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) and Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) and senior Megan Gonzalez (Miller Place/Miller Place) each netted two goals. Freshman Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee), sophomore Baylee Ojeda (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and seniors Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) and Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) each contributed one goal. 

Freshman goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore) made nine saves in 36:15 for the Red Dragons before giving way to freshman Paige Potter (Cortland) who stopped two shots in 23:45. Senior Carli Clementi (Huntington/Harborfields) added four ground balls. Meager won four draw controls and caused one turnover. 

Senior Tara Bovich (West Islip/West Islip) scored two goals for the Hawks. Senior Kayla Massena (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), freshman Amy Hofer (Selden/Newfield) and sophomore Emily Puciloski (East Meadow/East Meadow) added one goal. Junior Sara Raynock (Mount Sinai) won six draw controls. Sophomore goalie Nichole Sheintul (Baldwin/Baldwin) made eight saves and scooped up four ground balls.

Cortland built a 10-1 lead by the start of the second half. The Red Dragons scored four unanswered goals to bring the score to 14-1 at 17:58. Bovich netted an unassisted goal at 16:48 making the score 14-2, while Puciloski would score a free-position shot at  14:58 cutting the lead to 14-3. Gonzalez scored Cortland's last goal at 10:21, and the Red Dragons finished with a 15-5 victory over New Paltz.
