Cortland Wins at St. Lawrence, 8-0, for Third Straight Shutout

CANTON, N.Y. – Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) scored two of Cortland's first three goals and Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished with a goal and two assists as Cortland shut out host St. Lawrence, 8-0, in non-league field hockey action.

Cortland (8-3) won its third straight game, all by shutout. Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Marissa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) combined in goal for the shutout. Reinoehl made six saves in 54 minutes, 10 seconds, and D'Amico recorded one save over the final 15:50.

Branch gave Cortland a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game on a shot off a feed from Megan O'Brien (Carmel). Burchell put the Red Dragons up 2-0 on a rebound goal in the 25th minute, and her second goal of the game came with just 54 seconds elapsed in the second half to extend the advantage to 3-0.

Five Red Dragons finished with one goal apiece, all as part of the team's six-goal second half. Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) scored her team-high eighth goal of the season 4:17 into the half, followed less than three minutes later by a goal from Liz Athing (Bay Shore).

The lead grew to 7-0 on the first goals of the season by Amanda D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and Kelly Durso (East Islip) in the 55th and 61st minutes, respectively. Branch assisted on both of those tallies. Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) closed the scoring in the 65th minute off an assist from Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley).

St. Lawrence starting goalie Sophie Cardenali made five saves and allowed four goals in just over 39 minutes of action. Lexi Oskam made two saves and gave up three goals in 20:52, while Sydney Giacin played the final 9:51 and allowed one score. Molly Wood recorded a defensive save for the Saints (3-7).

Cortland will travel to Utica College for a non-league game Sunday at noon.
