ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team improved to 3-5 with a 74-49 road win at Alfred State on Tuesday.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake),
Alisha Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y. / Forestville), and
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) all scored in double digits.
Einink scored 15, had 5 steals, and 4 assists. Law scored 13, going 9 of 10 from the line, and had 6 boards and 5 assists. Szumigala added 11 points and tied Law with a team-high 6 rebounds.
The Pioneers (2-6)were led by Catherine Bialecki with 25 points, while Janae Gibson had 12 off the bench.
Fredonia opened the game with a 13-2 lead. A layup by Szumigala at the 6:21 mark gave the Devils an 11-point advantage. The Devils would lead by as many as 14 following a layup by Law late in the first to make it 25-11. Bialecki converted a layup for the Pioneers to make it a 25-13 game at the end of the first quarter.
Alfred State outscored the Devil 18-13 in the second quarter, leaving the Devils with a 38-31 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw Fredonia limit the Pioneers to only four points, outscoring them 15-4, and taking an 18-point lead at 53-35. The fourth quarter was all Fredonia as well, with the Devils outscoring Alfred 21-14.
The women will head home for the weekend, taking on Cortland and Oswego in a women's/men's SUNYAC doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday.
