Cortland Beats Host St. John Fisher, 102-78, to Repeat as Woodcliff Tourney Champ

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Six Cortland players scored in double figures and the team shot 16-for-27 (59 percent) from 3-point range as the Red Dragons defeated host St. John Fisher, 102-78, to repeat as champions at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament.

Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) led the way with 25 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Red Dragons, who improved to 6-2 with the victory. He shot 9-of-15 from the floor and was 6-for-7 from the foul line. Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) scored 20 points and handed out three assists. He made 4-of-8 3-pointers.

Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) connected on a career-high four 3-pointers in just five attempts and finished with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Endher Gonzalez (Brooklyn/Prospect Heights) shot 7-for-8 from the field and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. He entered the game with just two points and one rebounds in two previous games this season.

Jake DiSanto (Victor) made all three of his 3-point tries and was 5-for-6 overall from the floor for 13 points. Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) hit 4-of-7 shots, all from the arc, and ended with 12 points and four assists. Isaiah Preston (Penfield) finished with four assists.

St. John Fisher (5-6) was led by Sean Williams' 18 points and six assists. He hit 7-of-12 shots from the field. Sammy Robinson tallied 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Matt Asenjo scored 13 points and had three steals.

Cortland trailed 36-28 with 7:12 left in the first half but  went on a 14-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to take a 42-36 lead. The run featured two Schmadel 3-pointers and one each by DiSanto and Fitzpatrick and was capped by a Grunder layup with 4:43 left.

The Red Dragons' lead grew to 52-40 late in the half. Fisher drew within 10 on a late steal and layup just before halftime. Cortland, however, scored the first four points of the second half, and the Red Dragons' lead only dipped into single digits once after that at 70-61 with 11:49 left. A Fitzpatrick 3-pointer and a layup by Gonzalez off a Fitzpatrick feed pushed the margin back to 14, and Cortland steadily pulled away from that point.

Cortland finished the game shooting 63 percent overall from the floor, including the 59 percent mark from long range, and the Red Dragons made 12-of-15 free throws. Fisher ended at 52 percent overall and 10-of-27 (37 percent) from the arc and was 4-for-6 from the foul line.

Cortland will host Cabrini University of Pennsylvania in a non-league game Saturday at 2 p.m.
