Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Brockport Freezes No. 16 Cortland, 10-8

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team shocked No.16 SUNY Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon, winning by a final score of 10-8. The Golden Eagles move to 5-6 (3-1 SUNYAC) in 2018, where the Red Dragons fall to 8-5 (3-1 SUNYAC).

This is the first time that the Golden Eagles beat Cortland in 16 years, and also snapped the Red Dragons 56-game regular-season conference win streak that dates back to 2009.

Brockport started hot as they scored five seconds into the first period and never looked back. Michael Caternolo won the opening faceoff and took the ball down the field to score for the Green and Gold, to take a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles doubled up minutes later on a man-up advantage, when Patrick Sheridan smoked his shot past the keeper top corner to pull ahead 2-0.  Brockport suffered, as Cortland answered seconds later to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Green and Gold picked up the pace as Nick Daigle notched back-to-back goals to take a demanding 4-1 lead. The Red Dragons tallied a last second goal to set the score at 4-2 going into the next quarter.

Brockport dominated the second quarter defensively as they held Cortland off the scoresheet. The Golden Eagles limited the Red Dragons to five shots on goal, while stopping them on their man-up advantage. The Green and Gold's offense picked up the intensity midway through the second, when Colton Oliver snipped top corner on an extra-man opportunity to extend their lead to 5-2. Goalie Dallas Meyers iced the Cortland offense with a pair of saves late to keep the same score heading into the halftime break.

The Golden Eagles offense came out hot in the third quarter, as even the freezing weather could not slow them down. Liam O'Connor scored the first goal in the third, as he beat the goalie low as he was falling down to the ground to take a 6-2 lead. Cortland chipped away at the lead after they tallied a pair of goals to set the score at 6-4. Brockport responded with a three-goal run to take their largest lead of the game, 9-4. Patrick Sheridan was the first to score on the run when he ripped a shot far post past the visiting goalie. Peter Scavone was the next to cash-in for the Green and Gold on a man-up advantage, with a quick catch-and-shoot goal.  Billy Coppola notched the last goal during the three-goal swing. After a caused-turnover by Steven Gurin, Brockport had a fast-break opportunity, which left Coppola with a one-on-one with the goal that he capitalized. Cortland scored two goals late in third to decrease the gap to 9-6 heading into the final quarter.

Brockport went to battle in the fourth, but slipped early on when the Red Dragons added another goal to now trail 9-7. Both teams fought back-and-fourth for the remainder of the period, but it was O'Connor for the Golden Eagles to score his second goal on the day to lead 10-7 and to ice the game. Cortland answered with another goal, but the Brockport defense locked down for the remainder of the contest to hold onto the victory and win, 10-8.

Brockport capitalized on their man-up opportunities as they were 3-6, while holding the Red Dragons scoreless on all four attempts they were man-up.

Michael Caternolo dominated in the faceoff circle as he went 15-21 on the day, with eight groundballs.

The offense was led by three different Golden Eagles, O'Connor, Sheridan, and Daigle, as they all had two goals and an assist. Pat Quinlivan led the defensive charge, with three caused turnovers and four groundballs, and Joe Chiarmonte and Gurin added had two caused turnovers apiece.

The two-time SUNYAC Goalie of the Week, Dallas Meyers, proved his status in the cage, racking up 18 saves on the afternoon.

With this win, Brockport men's lacrosse is now tied for first place in the SUNYAC.

The Golden Eagles men's lacrosse hits the road as they face Plattsburgh State next Saturday April 21, with the game set to start at 1 p.m.
