Volleyball splits on final day of Canton Roos Classic

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (11-12) defeated Elmira College (15-10) 3-0 before falling to host SUNY Canton (8-17) 3-2. Freshman outside hitter Anika Anderson (Honolulu, Hawaii/Radford) led the Bears offense with 21 kills, 10 aces and 27 digs.
 
The Bears opened the day by rolling past Elmira 25-22, 25-13 and 25-20. Anderson had eight kills, two aces and 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) also totaled eight kills, while freshman middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) recorded seven kills and a career-high six blocks. Junior defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) contributed 14 digs, freshman opposite Cierra Farnschalder (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay Magnet) added four blocks and senior captain Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) had six digs. Junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) posted a game-high 35 assists.
 
In the finale, the Bears raced out to a 2-0 lead on 25-23 and 25-17 wins before the Kangaroos stormed back with 25-23, 25-21 and 15-12 victories. Anderson had 13 kills, a game-high eight aces and 13 digs. Tompkins added another eight kills and six digs to her day's total and freshman middle hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) registered seven kills. Farnschlader and Mack recorded four and three blocks, respectively. Kaplan picked up 23 digs, Healis had six and Rodda rounded out the leaders with 38 assists.
 
The Bears return to SUNYAC play on Friday when they travel to Buffalo State for a 5 p.m. matchup with The College at Brockport.
