Durnin Double-Doubles In Buffalo State Loss

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore guard/forward Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) picked up her first collegiate double-double in the Plattsburgh State women's basketball 63-62 loss to Buffalo State Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hall.

The Cardinals drop to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while the Bengals move to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Durnin recorded 11 points and a team high of 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led the Cardinals with 15 points and junior guard Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) recorded 10 points. Both Durnin and Thompson were 4-4 in free throws.

Buffalo State only out-scored Plattsburgh State in the first quarter 20-15. The Cardinals came back in the second quarter out-scoring the Bengals 10-6 and tied the remaining two quarters 20-20 and 17-17.

The Bengals had a ten point lead with 1:20 left in the first quarter but a layup from Merkel and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) cut their lead to five heading into the second quarter.

Thompson started the second quarter with a three-pointer followed by another three-pointer from freshman guard Hannah Whitney (Keene, N.Y. / Keene Central) to take the lead 21-20.

The game was tied two more times before Buffalo State made a free throw to head into halftime up 26-25.

The lead changed six times in the third quarter but the Bengals headed into the final quarter up 46-45.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth ball game being tied five times with the lead changing six times.

Thompson tied the game and took the lead to start the fourth with two free throws. Merkel tied the game again with a free throw and then tied in once more with a layup.

The Bengals took a five point lead halfway through the fourth but four free throws followed by a three-pointer all from Durnin gave the Cardinals a 57-55 advantage. Freshman guard/ forward Lauren Lawliss (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) made it 59-55 with two free throws with 2:39 left in the game.

Buffalo State went on a five point run to take a one point lead but Thompson took it back with two free throws.

A jumper gave the Bengals another one point lead and a free throw from Whitney tied the game 62-62 with 12 second remaining.

Buffalo State was able to capitalize off a Plattsburgh State foul and made one free throw to take the one point win.

The Cardinals are on the road Tuesday, Dec. 5, to head to Middlebury, Vt. to play Middlebury at 5:30 p.m.
