Bears battle to earn split with Knights

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (3-12-1) took the ice for a rematch against Neumann University (4-10) on Saturday night, hoping to bounce back from Friday night's loss. The Bears jumped on the score sheet early and battled their way to a 5-3 victory. Bears sophomore goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) earned his first victory of the season, making 30 saves in net for the Bears.

The Bears came out firing, showcasing their speed and physical forechecking early in the opening stanza. Their hard work paid off quickly, as the Bears took the 1-0 lead just 5:31 into the game. Rob Clerc (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) started the breakout in the Bears defensive end with a cross ice feed to Tom Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) streaking into the Knights zone. Terranova then fed Jack Bloem (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) who made no mistake as he fired a shot past the Knights goaltender for the 1-0 lead. Following the goal, the Knights picked up their tempo and evened out play for the remainder of the period. The Bears held the 1-0 advantage at the break.

Steady pace of play continued into the second period, until penalties for both teams began to add up quickly. With 6:03 left to play in the period, the Bears were whistled for a 5-minte major penalty. The Knights made the most of the non-releasable penalty, scoring twice during the penalty time. The first Neumann power play goal was scored by Richie Brusco on a shot from the point through traffic. Assists on the goal were handed out to Zac Boyle and Tommy Dougherty. Just over 4 minutes later, while still on the power play, the Knights found the net again as Glenn Florczak buried a rebound in front of the Bears net. Assists on the second Neumann goal went to Dan Cangelosi and Clayton Boyd. Tensions continued to boil late in the period as the intensity and physicality began to increase. The Knights headed to the locker room with a 2-1 advantage.

The third period featured a swarm of goals as both teams fought to outlast the other. The Bears got on the board first in the final stanza, as senior forward Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) ripped a shot just 34 seconds in after gaining the blue line that crossed up the Neumann netminder. Freshman defenseman Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) and sophomore defenseman Joseph Richardson (Palm Beach, Fla./PAL Islanders) assisted on the play. Just over seven minutes later the Knights regained the lead on a goal by Cangelosi, assisted by Barry Kneedler and Mario Tropea. The back and forth scoring continued as Potsdam responded, scoring again to tie the game at three. The goal came from Terranova, who was assisted by Clerc and Lieth. Following the 3-3 tie, the Bears turned up the heat and secured the win. The go-ahead goal was scored on the powerplay by junior forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) with less than four minutes remaining. The brilliant passing of Joey Sollazzo (Ottawa, Ontario/Navan Grads) and Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) set up the goal. Sollazzo delivered the final blow to finish off the Knights as he buried an empty netter in the final minutes of play. Senior forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) assisted on the tally.

Kyle Pantelone finished with 32 saves for the Knights. The Bears were 1-3 on the power play, Neumann went 2-6.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday as they host cross-town rival SUNY Canton at 7 pm.

Prior to tonight's game, the Bears honored Maxcy Hall Facilities Director Dustin Smith before his departure to a new position at Dartmouth College.
